How do I access eResources from off-campus?

Go directly to the Wilson Dental Library website wdl.usc.edu and click on the eResource link you want to use (PubMed@USC, OvidSP, Journals, eBooks, Web-based Courseware, etc.).  When you are off campus or using USC wireless, you should be prompted with the login page automatically.  Use your USC computer account username and password.

If you experience trouble with access make sure you are logged off of VPN.

How do I find a book?

To see if the Library has the book you need, check HELIX, the online catalog.

Keep the following in mind when searching the catalog:

  • Some materials in the catalog are non-circulating, and may only be used in the library. Be certain to note which collection your book belongs to (Reserve, Reference, 2 week loan, 4 week loan or Journals).

o Reserve books are located behind the circulation desk (write down call number(s)  and give to staff to retrieve item(s)).
o Reference books are located in the reading room shelves right across from the reference librarian’s office.
o 2 week and 4 week loan books are located in the book collection room.

  • Non-circulating materials include Journals, Reference and Rare Book collections.
  • If you are searching for a specific book, you may search by title or author. If you are not certain of the exact title, or just want to browse the collections, you may want to perform a subject browse or general keyword search.

You may also locate reserve books by looking up the call numbers using the list in the binder at the circulation desk, as a PDF file on all JAWref computers in the library and the two email-only stations across from the circulation desk. This list includes all items on Reserve. It is also available electronically.

If you are looking for a book to check out and take with you, look for books that have a 2 week loan and 4 week loan period listed as their collection in the catalog. You may also take the call number for any reserve item you are interested in and check in the catalog or on the shelves for previous editions.

How do I renew my books?

To renew your books you have three options:

1. Online through HELIX by logging into your account using the USCID number or the barcode number on the back of your dental badge.
2. Over the phone by calling 213-740-0008.
3. In person, by presenting your USCID or dental badge at the Wilson Dental Library or the Norris Medical Library circulation desk.

You may renew Wilson Dental Library books three times, as long as:

* You do not have any blocks on your account.
* The books do not have any holds by other patrons.
* The books are NOT on reserve.

How do I find a specific journal title?

Start from the library’s homepage.  Under the “Catalog” tab in the Find box, you can use HELIX (the library’s online catalog) to search the library’s journal holdings by title or ISSN number.  Often the library will provide access to a journal in both print and electronic formats; this mode of searching will retrieve both.

For electronic journals

On the HELIX search results page, click on the journal title you wish to access.  Keep in mind that records for eJournals will have the words [electronic resource] following the title in brackets.  Click on the link listed for “web address.”  This will take you to the journal title information page where electronic holdings are listed and a direct link to the resource is provided.  If you are off-campus, you will have to authenticate using your USC computer account login and password.

Once you have arrived at the publisher’s page, locate the archive of past issues.  From here you can select the volume and number (or date) of the issue that contains the article you wish to obtain.

For print journals

On the Helix search results page, click on the journal title you wish to access.  Keep in mind that records for e-journals will have the words [electronic resource] following the title in brackets.  You will see the volumes and years owned by the library listed under “main run.”  Click “show all items” to display individual copies and see their location and availability.  With a few exceptions, Bound journals are shelved in the journal room.  Current journals (recently published journals that have not yet been bound) are shelved along the left side of the reading room.

Journals are always shelved alphabetically by title, and within each title, volumes are arranged chronologically.   Journals cannot be taken from the library, but keep in mind that their pages can be scanned or photocopied .

How do I find articles by topic?

You must select a database before you can find articles on a topic.  Links to the databases most commonly used by dental health professionals, OvidSP and PubMed@USC, and Web of Knowledge are listed under eResources page on the Wilson Library website.  You’ll also find a link to the Health Science Database (A-Z) where you can browse additional databases.

Make sure you access subscription databases, like the ones mentioned above, through the library’s website.  This will allow easy access to full text of many articles your search turns up.  Once you have done your search in a subject database, look for the icon to access.

How do I place a reserve item on hold?

You must come to the library in person the same day you want to borrow the reserve item for overnight use.  Present your current, valid USC library card (USC University ID or Ostrow School of Dentistry ID) and the call number of the item you would like to place on hold to Library Staff.

Items placed on hold are available on a first come basis.  Availability of the reserve item for overnight use is not guaranteed.  Library staff will inform you if the item is available for overnight use.

Can I place a hold on a reserve item over the phone?

Patrons are required to come in person to the library and present a current, valid USC library card (USC University I.D . or Ostrow School of Dentistry ID) to place a hold on reserve items.

Can I put a hold on a reserve item today and pick it up tomorrow?

Holds may be placed only for same-day overnight use.

I forgot my USC library card, can I use my driver’s license or other ID to place a hold on a reserve item?

Only a current, valid USC University ID or Ostrow School of Dentistry ID will be accepted to place holds on reserve items.

I forgot my USC library card, can I use my friend’s USC library card, to place a hold on a reserve item?

University ID’s are non-transferable and using your friend’s USC library card may violate university policies.

I placed a hold on a reserve item, when can I pick it up?

Reserve items must be picked up the same day the hold was placed between 4:00 P.M. and 7:00 P.M.  Reserve holds not picked up by 7:00 P.M. will become available to any other Ostrow student on a first come basis.

Can I give my library card to a friend or family member to pick up the reserve item I put on hold?

Reserve holds can only be picked up by the person who placed the hold.  At all times University ID’s are non-transferable and allowing others to use your ID may violate university policies.

I forgot to pick up the reserve item I placed on hold.  Can I pick it up tomorrow?

Reserve holds are only valid for the same day you place the hold.  Reserve holds are cancelled once they are not picked up by 7:00 P.M.  and become available to any other Ostrow student on a first come basis.  If you still want to borrow the item on another day, you will need to come to the library to place a new hold.

I placed a hold on a reserve item, but I don’t want it anymore.  Do I need to do anything?

You are not required to do anything.  However; we do ask that you that inform Library staff when you no longer want to the item.   Out of consideration for your fellow classmates, cancelling a hold you no longer intend to use will free it up for another.

When is my reserve item due back?

Most reserve items that are checked out for overnight use are due back the next day by 10:00 A.M.  Reserve holds picked up on Fridays are due back Monday by 10:00 A.M. (Tuesday by 10:00 A.M if Monday is a University holiday).

If you are unsure when your reserve item is due, you can call the library’s circulation desk at 213-740-6476.  You can also check your online library account at http:helix.usc.edu   Please make sure you have your library card available when checking on the status of your reserve item.

I checked out a reserve item, but I want to keep it longer, can I renew it through my online library account, or call the library to renew it?

Reserve items cannot be renewed by phone or through your online library account.  You will need to bring the reserve item to the library’s circulation desk, along with your USC library card, to renew it.

Will I be fined if I return my reserve item late?

Each reserve item incurs a $1.00 per hour fine for every hour that it is late.   You are given a 59-minute grace period before fines begin to accrue.
